Usually, each separate document needs its own apostille
An apostille generally authenticates one public signature, seal, or stamp on one underlying document. A single multi-page instrument may use one apostille when it was executed and certified or notarized as one document. Separate vital records, court orders, business records, or independently notarized documents usually require separate apostilles.

A multi-page power of attorney, affidavit, agreement, or declaration signed and notarized as one continuous instrument may receive one apostille for the one notarial certificate.
Several separate public records
Separate birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, court orders, or certified business records remain separate documents even when submitted together.
Several independently signed documents
Separate affidavits, powers of attorney, consents, or agreements generally require separate apostilles when each has its own signature, notarial certificate, seal, or certifying official.
Common examples
- One five-page power of attorney with one completed Nevada acknowledgment: it may be treated as one document for one apostille.
- Three separately certified birth certificates: each certified record generally needs its own apostille.
- One notarized power of attorney and one certified court order: they are separate documents with different public signatures and generally require separate apostilles.
- One affidavit with attached exhibits: an apostille on the affidavit authenticates the notarial certificate on that affidavit. It does not independently authenticate public signatures, seals, or certifications appearing on the exhibits.
- Several certified copies of the same record: each copy intended to function as an authenticated original generally needs its own attached apostille.
The receiving authority must accept the document structure
A consulate, court, registry, school, bank, employer, or attorney may require each underlying record to carry its own apostille even when the records support one transaction. Do not merge, rewrite, or attach separate documents solely to reduce the apostille count without confirmation from the document’s authorized preparer and the final recipient.
